About This Beat Maker

SoundTools.io Beat Maker is a free online drum machine and beat-making tool that runs entirely in your browser. It features playable drum pads with a 16-step sequencer, seven classic drum machine kits with authentic samples, and the ability to record your own sounds using your microphone. No account, no download, no upload required — just open the page and start making beats.

The tool has two modes. Drum Pad mode gives you a grid of 16 colorful pads you can tap or click to play drum sounds instantly — use keyboard shortcuts to finger-drum like a pro. Step Sequencer mode lets you build repeating patterns on a 16-step grid (or 32 steps), with all 16 pads available as sequencer tracks, each with independent volume and mute controls. Load genre presets for hip-hop, trap, rock, house, lo-fi, drum and bass, reggaeton, bossa nova, and afrobeat — or start from scratch.

Add effects like reverb, distortion, and bit crusher to shape your sound, then export your beat as a WAV or MP3 file. Choose to export 1, 2, 4, or 8 loops. The file is named with BPM and kit information so you can organize your creations.

Classic Drum Machine Kits

Our beat maker includes seven iconic drum machine kits, each featuring 16 authentic one-shot samples. These are the machines that defined modern music — from the hip-hop revolution to house, techno, new wave, synth-pop, and beyond. Every kit is available to play instantly in your browser, with no download or account required.

Roland TR-808 — The Foundation of Hip-Hop and Trap

The Roland TR-808 is arguably the most influential drum machine ever made. Released in 1980, the 808 was originally considered a commercial failure — but its deep booming kick, snappy snares, and crisp hi-hats went on to define hip-hop, trap, electro, and countless other genres. From Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock" to Kanye West's "808s & Heartbreak" to virtually every trap beat ever produced, the TR-808's sounds are woven into the DNA of modern music. Our TR-808 kit includes four kick variations, two snares, two toms, two hi-hats, two crashes, ride, clap, maracas, and rimshot.

Akai MPC-60 — The Beat-Making Legend

The Akai MPC-60, designed by Roger Linn and released in 1988, became the centerpiece of golden-age hip-hop production. Its 12-bit sampling gave drums a warm, gritty character that producers like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, J Dilla, and Dr. Dre made iconic. The MPC-60's slightly crunchy, lo-fi quality is the sound of boom bap and East Coast hip-hop. Our MPC-60 kit includes four kicks, two snares, four hi-hat variations, three claps, casaba, cowbell, and rimshot.

Roland TR-707 — The Bridge to Digital

The Roland TR-707, released in 1984, bridged the gap between analog and digital drum machines. Its clean, punchy sounds became staples of early house music, Italo disco, and synth-pop. The 707's crisp digital snares and bright hi-hats were heard on countless club tracks throughout the mid-1980s. Our TR-707 kit includes two kicks, two snares, three toms, three hi-hats, crash, ride, clap, cowbell, tambourine, and rimshot.

Roland TR-909 — The Heartbeat of House and Techno

The Roland TR-909 is the drum machine that launched house and techno. Released in 1983, the 909's punchy analog kick, sizzling hi-hats, and distinctive handclap became the rhythmic backbone of dance music from Chicago house to Detroit techno to Berlin minimal. Virtually every house and techno track owes something to the 909. Our TR-909 kit includes three kicks, three snares, two toms, four hi-hats, ride, two rimshots, and clap.

LinnDrum LM-1 — The Sound of the 1980s

The LinnDrum LM-1, created by Roger Linn in 1982, was the first drum machine to use digital samples of real drums. It defined the sound of 1980s pop, from Prince's "When Doves Cry" to Human League's "Don't You Want Me" to Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer." The LM-1's clean, realistic samples were revolutionary for their time. Our LM-1 kit includes two kicks, two snares, two toms, two hi-hats, crash, rimshot, two congas, tambourine, clap, casaba, and cowbell.

Roland CR-78 — The First Programmable Drum Machine

The Roland CR-78, released in 1978, was the world's first microprocessor-based programmable rhythm machine. Its analog sounds appeared on Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," and countless other late-70s and early-80s recordings. The CR-78 has a distinctive warm, vintage character unlike any other machine. Our CR-78 kit includes two kicks, two snares, three hi-hats, cymbal, two tambourines, two bongos, conga, cowbell, and two guiro variations.

Oberheim DMX — The Electro and Hip-Hop Powerhouse

The Oberheim DMX, released in 1981, became the go-to drum machine for early hip-hop and electro. Run-DMC, New Order, Depeche Mode, and countless others relied on its punchy, aggressive sounds. The DMX's tight kick and crisp snare cut through any mix, making it perfect for both the dance floor and the studio. Our DMX kit includes kick, snare, five toms, three hi-hats, crash, ride, tambourine, clap, rimshot, and shaker.

How to Use the Beat Maker

Getting Started — Drum Pads: When you open the Beat Maker, you'll see a grid of colorful drum pads. Each pad plays a different sound. Click or tap any pad to hear it. On desktop, you can also use keyboard shortcuts — the keys Q, W, E, R (top row of pads), A, S, D, F (middle row), and Z, X, C, V (bottom row) trigger the corresponding sounds. This lets you "finger drum" with both hands for complex rhythms.

Switching to the Step Sequencer: Click "Step Sequencer" at the top to switch modes. You'll see a grid with 16 rows (one per pad/drum sound) and 16 columns (one per 16th note in a measure). Click any cell to activate it — when you hit Play, the sequencer loops through the columns from left to right, triggering every active cell. This is how classic drum machines like the Roland TR-808 and TR-909 work.

Loading Pattern Presets: Use the Preset dropdown to load pre-made beat patterns. Select "Boom Bap" for a classic hip-hop groove, "Trap" for rolling hi-hats, "Four on the Floor" for house and EDM, or any of the other genre presets. Each preset sets the grid pattern and adjusts BPM to match the genre. You can then modify any preset to make it your own.

Recording Your Own Sounds: Hover over any pad and click the microphone icon to record a custom sound. Allow microphone access when prompted, then make a sound — the tool records up to 3 seconds and automatically trims silence from the beginning and end. Click "Use This Sound" to assign it to the pad. Now that pad plays your custom recording instead of the default sound.

Adjusting Tempo and Swing: Change the BPM (beats per minute) using the number input or the Tap Tempo button — tap the button in rhythm and the BPM adjusts to match your tempo. The Swing control adds a shuffle feel by slightly delaying every other 16th note, great for hip-hop and jazz grooves.

Adding Effects: Open the Effects panel to add reverb (room ambience), distortion (gritty overdrive), or bit crusher (lo-fi digital degradation). These apply to the master output, affecting all drum sounds together.

Exporting Your Beat: Select how many loops you want (1, 2, 4, or 8) and the format (WAV for highest quality, MP3 for smaller file size), then click "Export Beat." The tool records the sequencer playing through the selected number of loops and downloads the file automatically.

Use Cases

Make Quick Beats for Fun: Tap the drum pads to play sounds, record your own voice or objects as custom samples, and share your creations with friends. The Beat Maker is designed to be fun from the very first tap — no musical experience needed.

Learn Drum Patterns: Load genre presets to see how rock, hip-hop, trap, and other drum patterns are structured. Modify them to understand how changing a kick or snare placement changes the feel of a beat. The step sequencer makes rhythm visible and interactive.

Create Backing Tracks for Practice: Musicians can build a drum loop at any tempo to practice guitar, bass, piano, or vocals. Much more engaging than a metronome, and customizable to any style. Set the BPM, choose a kit, build or load a pattern, and practice along.

Make Beats for Videos and Content: Create original drum loops for YouTube intros, podcast transitions, TikTok videos, or any content that needs a beat. Export as WAV or MP3 and import into your video editor. No royalty issues — you made it.

Sketch Ideas Before Opening a DAW: Producers can quickly sketch drum ideas in the browser before committing to a full production session in FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic. Export the loop and import it into your DAW as a starting point.
