What is Audio Metadata?
Audio metadata (also called tags or ID3 tags) is information embedded in your music files that tells music players about the song. This includes the artist name, album title, song title, year released, genre, track number, and album artwork (cover art).
When you add cover art and edit metadata tags, your music library becomes organized and displays beautifully in iTunes, Windows Media Player, Spotify, and all music apps. Proper metadata makes it easy to browse your collection, create smart playlists, and enjoy album artwork while listening.
Supported Metadata Fields by Audio Format
MP3 Files (ID3 Tags):
MP3 uses ID3v2 tags which support: Title (song name), Artist (performer), Album (album name), Year (release year), Genre (music genre), Track Number (track position), Comment (custom notes), and Cover Art (album artwork). MP3 has the most comprehensive tagging support and is ideal for well-organized music libraries.
FLAC Files (Vorbis Comments):
FLAC uses Vorbis comments: Title, Artist, Album, Date (release date), Genre, Track Number, Comment, and Cover Art. FLAC metadata is stored as name-value pairs and supports album artwork embedding. Perfect for lossless music collections with complete metadata.
WAV Files (Limited Metadata):
WAV has very limited native metadata support and does NOT support embedded cover art. WAV files are designed for uncompressed audio and focus on audio quality rather than metadata. Our tool allows editing basic tags (title, artist) for WAV files, but cover art cannot be added as it would corrupt the file. For lossless audio with full metadata and cover art support, use FLAC instead.
M4A Files (MP4 Tags):
M4A files are AAC audio in an MP4 container - the standard format used by iTunes, Apple Music, and most streaming services. M4A uses MP4 metadata tags: Title, Artist, Album, Date, Genre, Track Number, Comment, and Cover Art. M4A has excellent metadata support and is widely compatible with Apple devices, iTunes, and most modern music players. This is what you get when you purchase music from iTunes or rip CDs with iTunes.
OGG Files (Vorbis Comments):
OGG uses Vorbis comments like FLAC: Title, Artist, Album, Date, Genre, Track Number, Comment. However, OGG does NOT support embedded cover art through our tool. OGG requires a special METADATA_BLOCK_PICTURE format for cover art which cannot be reliably embedded using browser-based tools without re-encoding the audio. Our tool allows editing all text metadata for OGG files, but cover art cannot be added. For audio with full metadata and cover art support, consider using FLAC (lossless) or MP3 (compressed).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add cover art to FLAC files?
Select "FLAC (Vorbis Comments)" as your format, upload your FLAC file, click "Add Cover Art" to select your album artwork image, optionally edit other metadata tags (artist, album, title), then click "Save Metadata". Your FLAC file will download with embedded cover art and any updated tags you entered.
Can I add cover art to MP3 files?
Yes! Select "MP3 (ID3 Tags)" as your format, upload your MP3 file, add cover art by selecting an image, edit any ID3 tags you want to change (artist, album, title, year, genre, track number, comment), and click "Save Metadata". Your MP3 will download with embedded album artwork and updated metadata.
What audio formats can I edit metadata for?
Our metadata editor supports MP3, FLAC, WAV, M4A, and OGG audio formats. You can add cover art to MP3, FLAC, and M4A files. WAV and OGG support text metadata editing but not embedded cover art.
What metadata fields can I edit for each format?
MP3: Title, Artist, Album, Year, Genre, Track Number, Comment, Cover Art. FLAC: Title, Artist, Album, Date, Genre, Track Number, Comment, Cover Art. M4A: Title, Artist, Album, Date, Genre, Track Number, Comment, Cover Art. OGG: Title, Artist, Album, Date, Genre, Track Number, Comment (no cover art). WAV: Title, Artist only (no cover art).
Will editing metadata reduce my audio quality?
No! The audio stream is copied without re-encoding, so your audio quality remains perfect whether you're working with lossless FLAC, high-quality MP3, or any other format. Only the metadata tags and cover art are updated - the actual audio data is untouched.
What image formats can I use for cover art?
JPG, PNG, and BMP formats are supported for cover art. Most music players prefer square images (500x500, 1000x1000, or 1400x1400 pixels) for best display. Our tool automatically embeds your chosen image into the audio file. Note: WebP format is not supported as it causes compatibility issues with many music players.
Do I need to install any software?
No installation required! This audio metadata editor and cover art tool works entirely in your web browser. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android - any device with a modern web browser.
Can I edit metadata for my entire music library?
Absolutely! There are no limits on how many files you can process. Edit one file or thousands - it's always free. For batch processing many files, you'll need to process them one at a time, but each file only takes seconds.
What's the difference between ID3 tags and Vorbis comments?
ID3 tags are used by MP3 files and store metadata in a standardized format. Vorbis comments are used by FLAC and OGG files and store metadata as name-value pairs. Both serve the same purpose - storing song information and album artwork - but use different technical formats.
Why should I add cover art to my music files?
Adding cover art (album artwork) makes your music library visually appealing and easier to browse. Album artwork displays in music players, on phone lock screens, in car displays, and in media center apps. It helps you quickly identify albums and makes your listening experience more enjoyable.
Can I remove or replace existing cover art?
Yes! If your audio file already has cover art, you can upload a new image to replace it. The tool will embed your new album artwork and remove the old one. You can also update any other metadata tags at the same time.
What if I only want to add cover art without changing other tags?
Simply upload your audio file, add your cover art image, and leave all other metadata fields as they are. The tool will preserve your existing tags and only embed the new album artwork. Click "Save Metadata" and your file will download with the cover art added.
Can I add cover art to M4A files?
Yes! M4A files (AAC audio in MP4 container) have excellent cover art support. Select "M4A (MP4 Tags)" as your format, upload your M4A file, add cover art by selecting an image, edit any metadata tags (artist, album, title, date, genre, track number, comment), and click "Save Metadata". M4A is the standard format used by iTunes and Apple Music, so cover art will display perfectly in all Apple devices and most music players.
Can I add cover art to OGG files?
Unfortunately, no. OGG/Vorbis files require a special METADATA_BLOCK_PICTURE format for embedded cover art which cannot be reliably added using browser-based tools without re-encoding the audio (which would reduce quality). Our tool hides the cover art option for OGG files to prevent corruption. You can still edit all text metadata (title, artist, album, date, genre, track number, comment) for OGG files. If you need cover art support, consider using FLAC for lossless audio or MP3/AAC for compressed audio.
Does WAV support metadata?
WAV has very limited native metadata support compared to MP3, FLAC, AAC, and OGG. WAV files do not support embedded cover art - attempting to add cover art to WAV files will corrupt them. Our tool hides the cover art option for WAV files to prevent this issue. WAV supports only basic text metadata (title, artist). If you need extensive metadata and cover art support, consider using FLAC (for lossless) or MP3 (for compressed) formats instead.
Can I use this tool for music I purchased or downloaded?
Yes! You can edit metadata and add cover art to any audio files you own, including music purchased from iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp, or ripped from your CD collection. This tool is perfect for organizing and tagging your personal music library.
